Part of our professional responsibilities involves knowing if, what, and how well students learn what is being taught. Ideally, assessment would be a regular, inherent, and transparent part of all teaching and learning. Assessment of student learning, and a focus on persistence and completion are ways in which the institution improves and thus assures the quality of its teaching and learning. Assessment applies not only to student learning and educational outcomes but to an institution’s approach to improvement of institutional effectiveness.
